Point of view offers plan-of-action for health care technology communicators

Airfoil Public Relations, an independent public relations agency specializing in public relations and marketing communications for both leading and emerging companies, today announced the publication of its latest Point of View (POV), Engage, Embrace, Empower: Influencing Health Care Policy in the Digital Era.

This thought leadership publication explores digital media’s impact on the speed, volume, risks and rewards of policy reform dialogue, as well as a recommended plan of action that health care communicators can use to define their organizations’ voices in the debate.

"The health care policy reform discussion transcends the business-as-usual approach that may have historically worked for other types of reform, and the digital environment in which it’s taking place both advances and complicates the debate,” said Airfoil Public Relations Account Director Keith Donovan. “This POV brings to bear our deep understanding of health care communications; the public affairs discipline and how to leverage digital media as an agent of influence. We explore more than the undeniable impact digital media has on public policymaking, and equip health care organizations with immediately actionable steps to ensure their business interests are considered.

Topics covered within Engage, Embrace, Empower: Influencing Health Care Policy in the Digital Era include:

  • The first steps to mobilizing a constituency: issue definition and agenda setting
  • The “small acts” of social media engagement that can have great impact on policy reform
  • The importance of employing both offensive and defensive digital communication strategies in order for a health care organization’s message to be heard during the policy change process
  • A 5-point plan of action that reinforces fundamental communication and public relations practices, while urging adoption of the new online tools available to organizations and constituents

The Airfoil health care POV is part of the agency’s series of Points of View issued regularly to keep clients and other businesses advised of the latest trends impacting companies of all sizes.

Large companies regularly attempt to court small and midsized businesses (SMBs), but they frequently find themselves holding a bouquet of wilted marketing materials when they don’t understand what SMBs really want. A new Airfoil Public Relations Higher Thinking quiz, based on the agency’s primary research conducted among SMB decision-makers, gives enterprises a chance to see how well they understand the preferences of SMBs and the sources that SMB executives trust most.

The 10-question quiz offers several insights. For example, the most important benefit that SMBs value in a product or service is not cost savings (though that ranks high), but time savings. Airfoil also found that social networks have become important to smaller businesses, with, for instance, 20 percent of the decision-makers logging onto Facebook every day. Three out of 10 use LinkedIn daily or weekly.

As for their information preferences, respondents indicated they listen to radio talk and NPR two-and-a-half times as much as they listen to radio news programming. The quiz explores other most-trusted media among SMBs, as well as their preferences regarding how they receive business pitches and the types of publications they read most often.

"Enterprises need to think a little differently when approaching smaller-business owners," noted Airfoil Vice President Leah Haran. "SMBs are prone to seek sources of information that are most like themselves and reflect an understanding of their issues. Marketers should avoid ‘one size fits all’ in favor of customizable, scalable solutions that address the evolving and unique needs of SMBs."

The Airfoil Higher Thinking quiz is part of the agency’s series of Points of View issued regularly to keep clients and other businesses advised of the latest trends impacting companies of all sizes.

CarBuddy and Classic Computer Recovery among the latest companies added to Airfoil’s growing green-tech client roster

As companies and consumers consider the impact of their actions on the environment and the Earth’s natural resources, and as energy prices continue to fluctuate, the importance of green practices and innovations is drawing increased attention. Airfoil Public Relations is working with category leaders in energy-related segments such as batteries, alternative energy, automotive and others, and continues to expand its green-tech practice, applying proven expertise in driving results for companies developing alternative energy and other green-related products and services. In addition to developing and executing ongoing successful programs for existing clients, Airfoil’s green-tech practice continues to gain momentum with the addition of two new clients.

Airfoil recently added CarBuddy and Classic Computer Recovery, Inc. to its green-tech practice.

Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., CarBuddy is a new and unique private enterprise solution to carpooling that employs advanced Web-based technology to connect drivers and passengers with each other within a designated geographical region. Airfoil is currently supporting CarBuddy’s launch through media relations, advertising and university and business-to-business relationship building throughout metro Detroit.

For Garden City, Mich.-based Classic Computer Recovery, Inc. (CCR), one of the leading asset recovery and electronics recycling companies in the Midwest, Airfoil has helped promote the company’s founder and CEO, Linda McFarland, as an e-waste thought leader and raise awareness about CCR’s zero waste solution for end-of-life electronic equipment through reuse and recycling for businesses and consumers.

Airfoil, which specializes in marketing communications and public relations for both leading and emerging companies, offers extensive expertise in green technology, having developed communications strategies for such brands as NextEnergy, TerraPass, ecostore USA, ilumisys, Imara, an E85 Viper project and other innovators. Airfoil’s green-tech practice is led by Vice President Rich Donley, APR, a veteran public relations professional with more than 20 years of expertise in PR and marketing strategies for companies in the alternative energy, technology and industrial/manufacturing industries.

“Green technology relates to some of the most important issues of our day—the future of fuel economy standards, lightweight and eco-friendly products, and efforts to conserve our natural resources,” Donley said. “From helping companies evaluate their position in the green market, to promoting their sustainable initiatives and marketing their offerings, Airfoil is acknowledged for its success in providing strategic counsel and delivering measurable results for a variety of business sectors pursuing green possibilities in this competitive environment.”

For companies looking for insights on an integrated approach to marketing and public relations opportunities without immediately committing to a full-blown PR campaign, Airfoil is offering its Marketing Acceleration Program (MAP), a product specifically tailored to each prospective client’s needs. The MAP provides research/audits with an executive summary, suggested campaign approaches, execution elements and messaging – all the components needed to build a company’s initial communications infrastructure. It also includes insights on how Airfoil can serve potential clients as a PR, marketing and branding partner once they are ready to engage in a full program.

In addition to its new work with emerging companies, Airfoil continues to elevate the brands and green initiatives of existing clients, including new, national and globally recognized organizations. Among its projects for a broad range of clients, Airfoil is:

  • Formally launching Imara Corp. – a lithium-ion battery company – out of stealth mode, having generated more than 5 million media impressions by securing a number of placements in high-profile national media outlets.
  • Executing a media relations campaign for the global launch of tier-one auto supplier Faurecia’s innovative Light Attitude concept that demonstrates the supplier’s expertise in vehicle weight savings for seating, interiors, front ends and exhaust systems.

Founded in New Zealand more than 15 years ago, the company produces plant-based, eco-friendly, home, personal and pet care products for consumers internationally. The program is driving awareness of the brand in the U.S. and encouraging product trials.

Managing Directors Larry Ayres and Bret Wacker Issue Point-of-View Paper on the New Federal Era

Across the corporate landscape, executives in many sectors are discovering that they unexpectedly have a new business partner—the federal government—and that, as a result, they need to participate in new types of dialogues in unfamiliar territory.  To help guide companies through this terrain, Airfoil Public Relations hasformally launched its public affairs practice.  The practice is headed by Managing Directors for Public Strategies Larry Ayres and Bret Wacker who this week released a point-of-view paper on the meaning of the new federal era for businesses and their marketing communications providers.

Ayres, with more than 30 years of experience in the public affairs arena, has held senior positions in Fortune 100 corporations, lobbying and law firms, and the military. He served six years as congressional liaison for the secretaries of Defense and the Army and, in the private sector, he has designed end-to-end government advocacy campaigns. In addition to directing the corporate government affairs office of the nation’s leading human resources solutions company, Ayres’ career has been highlighted by his success on behalf of a range of clients.  He has he managed legislative support for major programs in the U.S. departments of Defense and Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration as a lobbyist for a major defense contractor; assisted a major children’s hospital secure funding for construction and equipment of a pediatric trauma center; helped secure funding in defense appropriations for the development and operation of a child abuse prevention program for the USMC and Army and crafted successful strategies for nanotechnology companies seeking funds for participation in military programs.

Wacker has been a senior-level public affairs strategist for nearly 25 years in both the private and public sectors.  He was appointed to presidential posts in the U.S. departments of Labor, Energy and State and has advised the leadership of three national political campaigns.  A top-level corporate lawyer and multinational corporation executive, Wacker has led successful programs in public sector business and market development and in public-policy advocacy.  His achievements include spearheading a federal market growth strategy for a global human resources provider; designing and implementing a global software vendor’s strategy for federal GSA multiple-award schedule award and compliance; and negotiating blanket IT purchase agreements with the Defense Information Systems Agency and the states of California, New York, Florida and Ohio.

“Under the guidance of Larry and Bret, Airfoil’s public affairs unit will help our clients ensure that they gain the full benefit of new opportunities to work with federal programs and that they respond effectively to government rules or restrictions that may impact their businesses directly,” said Airfoil Client Solutions Executive Vice President Tracey Parry.
The point-of-view paper authored by Ayres and Wacker, titled “The Dawning of the New Federal Era: Its meaning for innovators and PR practitioners,” examines Airfoil research that suggests communicators for technology companies may not be taking the necessary steps to gain competitive benefits from the federal economic stimulus efforts.  In analyzing the research findings, Ayres and Wacker note, “…a majority of respondents — 62 percent -  are not intending to elevate their communications efforts in response [to the economic stimulus legislation]. And 68 percent indicated they will not work to improve the quality of their communications in competitive bidding documents to take better advantage of stimulus-generated opportunities. Such indifference could prove fatal to any organization seeking stimulus-related funds.”

Airfoil Public Affairs will assist communicators across a wide spectrum of business sectors in adapting their new-business, marketing and public relations efforts to the realities of today’s public-private partnership environment.  Quoting Airfoil Chief Executive Officer Lisa Vallee-Smith, the point-of-view paper warns, “This administration clearly intends to use the budget process to make sure the economy that emerges from this recession is operating under a different paradigm. Details are less important at this point; the goal is to put stakes in the ground.  As a result, no longer can innovators and their marketers rely on just market forces to determine whether their efforts will be adopted by consumers, both personal and business. Ignorance of governmental policy trends will lead to missed opportunities and wasted investment.”

Marketers and other communicators may download “The Dawning of the New Federal Era” point-of-view paper from the Airfoil Web site at http://www.airfoilpr.com/viewpoint-pdf/PublicAffairs-POV.pdf.
